mitt romney, tall, imposing. both of these men are tall, they look presidential. so just appearing on that stage, with the president of the united states, helps the challenger. >> it helps the challenger but think about, for example, mitt romney's challenge versus ronald reagan's challenge in 1980, ronald reagan's challenge was to convince people that the viewers out there, that he had the gravitas, the intellectual force to be president. he didn't have to convince them he was likable. that seems to be an easier challenge to achieve than for a mitt romney to come across to people as somebody they want to have in their living room for the next four years talking to them when that has been the challenge all along that people have not for one reason or another really warmed up to him. that's going to be hard to do in the course of a debate and also in the course of a debate where you simultaneously want to be likable but also to rattle your opponent a little bit. >> you have to be negative and irritating and try to get president obama off his game, but at the same ti

neither president obama or mitt romney is ready to take on the gun lobby. is that a disappointment to you? >> i don't think in this campaign this issue is foremost on people's minds. it is very much on our minds in colorado because of this tragedy. we need to have a conversation about what we want to do going forward on this issue, but it doesn't surprise me that it hasn't been an issue in this campaign. >> what's your challenge here in winning colorado for the president? >> i think the president needs to keep doing what he's doing. this state values consistency. they want a politician, because it's a diverse state, says the same thing in this part of the state as in another part of the state and in one room and the other room, and his opponent had has difficulty with that. >> what about the fact you have the jobs numbers out on friday, continuing hardship for the middle-class voter and for, you know, those who are unemployed and those worried about losing their jobs and those still facing underwater with their housing? >> you know, as i travel the state i

governor romney has not done a high pressured one on one debate. and i think for all the talk of the fact that he may have done more presidential debates of anyone in american history not having high pressure one on one makes a difference. he's practicing and rob portman is a stand-in but my guess is if i was going to give the edge the president because between his debates with then senator clinton and debates against john mccain he's not going to have that hard swallow moment when he's out there dealing with the pressure. >> this was john kerry earlier in the program talking about the expectations you don't like at all. mark. >> this is the biggest deal in the world to him so he's been really getting ready for it and as we know from my experience with president bush, that debate can mean a lot. i went up eight to ten points after that debate. so mitt romney has a lot more going for him here. >> so, of course you worked with john kerry on his debate prep. can any of the big issues -- i was talking to rachel maddow earlier about afghanistan and all
